Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions is an archive and exhibit facility chronicling the history of the health sciences primarily in the Cincinnati area. The Winkler Center's over 35,000 volumes of rare and classic works on health history however broaden that scope to include Europe and date back almost 500 years. In addition to its archival collections, books, and medical objects, the Winkler Center also presents public and educational programming, and workshops throughout the year. Job Overview Full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment responsible for the acquisition, accession, processing, and maintenance of the archives of health professionals and biomedical researchers, primarily those with a connection to the University of Cincinnati and/or the greater Cincinnati region. Identifies monograph materials to expand and extend the holdings of the Center. Leads the Center’s exhibit program, oral history program, web site development, and public programming initiatives. Partners with digital specialists to develop born-digital collections and to digitize high-value analog content to continue to expand the impact of the collection. Reports to and receives general direction from the Director, Health Sciences Library. Essential Functions • Provides leadership and expertise on workflow, tools, and best practices to support the management of legacy print materials as well as born-digital or digitized content. • Strategizes, develops, plans, and communicates processes for accessioning, ingesting, processing, describing, organizing, and preserving materials under the care of the Center. Includes creating finding aids in EAD and appropriate bibliographic records. • Serves on Library or University-wide teams as needed relative to digital collections work, as well as discovery and access solutions for archival resources. • Maintains the Center’s non-public records, inventories, and digital assets; determines the content, format, and timing for publicizing resources. • Leads the Center’s exhibits program including, but not limited to, on-site exhibits. • Provides reference services as requested from internal and external patrons. • Organizes and coordinates the Center’s oral history program of video and audio recordings of medical and other health professionals and researchers of exceptional accomplishment. • Plans and leads public programming initiatives including the annual Cecil Striker Lecture as well as the sporadic Lunch and Learn Programs. • Engages in outreach activities that serve to demonstrate the Center’s value in pedagogy and research; establish scholarly partnerships, partner with local and regional community groups, schools, and cultural heritage organizations. • Cultivates potential donors of archives; acquires archives, including negotiating instrument of gift, collaborates with UC Foundation to acquire funding resources to process and manage such collections. • Provides oral and written reports as directed. • Supervises Center support staff and student assistants. • Promotes collection and Center activities through blog posts and social media. • Participates in appropriate committees and organizations related to the duties and responsibilities of the department and in support of UC Libraries’ programs and strategic directions. Required Education Master's degree in library or information science with a demonstrated understanding of digital librarianship from an ALA-accredited institution or a graduate degree in a related field. Required Experience • Two years of experience processing archival collections (analog, digital, print, physical items) using established best practices. • General knowledge of standards-based metadate schema, including but not limited to the Extended Dublin Core schema. • Demonstrated experience in providing excellent customer service. • Demonstrated record of ongoing professional development and contribution; ability to meet UC Libraries reappointment, promotion, and tenure requirements. • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail; ability to manage a variety of tasks and multiple priorities. • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Additional Qualifications Considered • Additional graduate degree in a related field. • Experience processing born-digital archival collections using digital archival toolsets. • Knowledge of multiple metadata schemas such as VRA, MODS, and METS. • Working knowledge of current developments in linked data, semantic web applications, and the Resource Description Framework (RDF). • Experience using image editing and/or web development software. • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and developing functional specifications for integrating digital repositories with a CMS-based front end. • Supervisory experience in hiring, training, and supervising staff. • Experience managing and conducting oral history interviews, as well as script creation.
